Workshy former Fine Young Cannibals surfaces with solo album.
Strangely, given that Roland Gift was one of the defining voices of '80 Britain, his band Fine Young Cannibals actually released just two albums (1985's eponymous debut and 1989's The Raw & The Cooked). Since then, Gift has dabbled in acting, modeling and hibernating, but excelled only in the later. This solo album starts promisingly - Tell Me You Want Me Back is great and It's Only Money lopes along lasciviously. His voice remains unique, the vowels open and yawning, every consonant sharply chiselled, but the fire that made Fine Young Cannibals so alluring is missing. In its place are solid rather than spectacular songs, that voice of his struggling to assert itself amid musical mediocrity.
